Camp Cope is an Australian rock trio formed in 2015. They alternative endings to popular songs and create thought-provoking artwork. The group is based in Melbourne and features singer-songwriter Georgia 'Maizy' McDonald on lead vocals and guitar, bassist Kelly-Dawn ‘Kel’ Hellmrich, and drummer Sarah Thompson.
Released in April 2016, their self-titled debut album debuted in the top 40 on the ARIA Albums Chart and received a J Award nomination for Australian Album of the Year. Additionally, they received six nominations for the first National Live Music Awards and took home the "Heatseeker Award." Camp Cope's self-titled first album is the 2016 Album of the Year according to the website Faster Louder. The quartet also won Best Emerging Act at the 2016 The Age Music Victoria Awards. On their list of "the 15 Australian female artists changing the game right now," Happy Mag ranked them third in 2019.
McDonald's commanding vocal, Hellmrich's distinctive basslines, and Thompson's "steady, stoic drumming" are all hallmarks of Camp Cope. The lyrics "express human entanglements with a lack of sentimentality that betrays how much [McDonald] cares," according to one reviewer, and they are "raw, minimal rock [with] a punk edge." Songs are initially created by McDonald, who then sends Hellmrich and Thompson a "crappy phone recording" before they all collaborate and finalize the song.
Many bands, including Philadelphia-based indie rockers Hop Along and Cayetana, whos CDs the band gave their engineer before recording How to Socialise & Make Friends, have impacted Camp Cope. Bassist Hellmrich has also been influenced by Mark Hoppus of blink-182 and Peter Hook of Joy Division.
