The Growlers co-founder and lead singer Brooks Nielsen is thrilled to present his first full-length solo album One Match Left, a double-vinyl, 20-song voyage into the depths of darkness and into the light that ultimately endures. Nielsen is uncompromising, cryptic, and outrageously ambitious.
“There’s happiness in there,” says Nielsen, speaking from his Los Angeles home. “The bands that I like have a sense of humor, like Television Personalities or Jonathan Richman, but there’s tragedy too. That’s the old theatrical tradition.” According to the song, Nielsen alternates between the roles of a rock & roll priest, a carnival barker, and a lullaby singer in One Match Left. In fact, this is Nielsen's first album without his bandmates from The Growlers; he is now joined by his old friends Levi Prairie and Christopher Darley, who plays guitar for Father John Misty.
Producer Michael Andrews, who is familiar with the emotional landscapes of contemporary popular culture, takes the songs beyond the theatrical and into the cinematic. Andrews composes cult favorites (such as "Mad World" from his soundtrack to Donnie Darko) and number-one songs from his Elgin Park Recordings studio in Glendale. He also provided the music for Freaks & Geeks and Pete Davidson's King of Staten Island. Nielsen describes Andrews as "an encyclopedia and incredibly skilled." Which implied that he may make a terrific studio commander.
