Anberlin is an American rock band formed in Winter Haven, Florida in 1998 and disbanded in 2014. The band consisted of lead vocalist Stephen Christian, guitarists Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney, bass guitarist Deon Rexroat, and drummer Nathan Young. Anberlin was one of the most commercially successful independent bands of the 2000s. The band's seventh studio album, Lowborn, peaked at No. 15 on the US Billboard 200, making it their highest charting release to date. Their final two albums debuted in the top 20 of the US Billboard 200: Vital and Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place (both peaking at No. 13).
Anberlin had a sound that was easily distinguishable from their contemporaries. Their music was marked by Christian's distinctively emotive, high-pitched vocals, as well as the guitar work of McAlhaney and Milligan. The band signed with Tooth & Nail Records and released their debut album, Blueprints for the Black Market, in 2002. In 2005, they released their second album, Never Take Friendship Personal, which peaked at No. 24 on the US Billboard 200. The band's breakthrough album came with 2007's Cities, which peaked at No. 19 on the US Billboard 200 and spawned the singles "Fire" and "Young Lifeless". The album marked a departure from the band's earlier sound, with a more experimental and atmospheric feel. 2010's Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place continued in this vein, debuting at No. 13 on the US Billboard 200 and giving the band their best chart performance to date.
