Since its formation in 1990, multi-platinum alternative rock band 311 has achieved an impressive array of accomplishments. From a humble beginning as a punk rock trio in Omaha, Nebraska, the band has matured into one of the most enduringly popular and successful names in modern American music. Here is a chronicle of 311’s history and achievements through their vast discography and prolific touring. 311 began life as ‘Fish Hippos’ in 1990, when guitarist Tim Mahoney, bassist P-Nut, drummer Chad Sexton and vocalist/guitarist Nick Hexum formed the group at Westside High School in Omaha. After honing their sound by playing cover songs around regionally, they decided to change their name to 311 (a police code for indecent exposure). By 1992, with help from record executive Carlos Balogh and producer Scott Ralston, they released two independent albums on Iowa’s PBK label – Unity (1992) and Hydroponic (1993) – that eventually went on to be certified gold.
In 1993, Adam Silverstein replaced Balogh as the band's record executive and he helped them ink their first major label deal with Capricorn Records. In 1995 314 Records was launched as a joint venture between Capricorn and Silverstein’s management company which gave them greater freedom as an artist. With this newfound autonomy, they experienced mainstream success with their third album Music (1993), which was certified platinum. Throughout the late 90s and early 00s, they continued to release critically acclaimed albums including Transistor (1997), Soundsystem (1999), and From Chaos (2001) all three of which were certified double platinum or higher by the RIAA. The band received renewed commercial success thanks to hits like “Amber” from 2002's Evolver which went on to be certified gold; 2005's Don't Tread On Me peaked at #7 on Billboard's Top 200 chart, and 2007's Uplifter soared up to #3 on Billboard Hot 200 chart and #1 on Independent Album Chart in its first week earning them another double platinum certification from RIIAA/
This period also saw 311 begin building out a busy touring schedule performing across America every summer for almost two decades now; hosting annual fan cruises since 2012; plus international tours, playing headlines and becoming staples at festivals like Lollapalooza, Outside Lands & Life Is Beautiful Music Festival. As of 2019 311 have sold more than nine million albums in America alone while accumulating seven Grammy nominations throughout their career so far; winning the Best Recording Package Award for the 2004 album 'Greatest Hits ‘93-03' package design created by Masaki Koike. Today they continue making music while maintaining an ever-loyal fanbase who have become known collectively as "the Hive". It is evident that through hard work determination passion & dedication, 311 has carved out a successful career full of achievements many bands can only dream of achieving.
