Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an iconic open-air amphitheater located in Morrison, Colorado and just ten miles west of the vibrant city of Denver. This distinctive rock structure has become a landmark that draws music fans from near and far to experience its one-of-a kind atmosphere. To the back of the stage lies a massive, disc-shaped rock leaning toward one side. On Stage Right is an immense vertical rock tilted outwardly with multiple large outcrops on Stage Left angled in the same direction. The entire seating area can accommodate up to 9,525 people comfortably. At an altitude of 6,450 feet (1,965 m), the topmost row of the amphitheatre towers above sea level. Additionally, Red Rocks Park in its entirety encompasses 868 acres (1.4 sq mi; 3.5 km2). The amphitheater is owned and operated by the City and County of Denver and is located in Red Rocks Park, part of the Denver Mountain Parks.
Gazing towards the south of Denver, audience members can see downtown's skyline to their left. An easterly-northeasterly view gives them a breathtaking sight. In honor of its 100th anniversary in 1957, the American Institute of Architects chose Red Rocks to represent Colorado at the National Gallery of Art for a special Centennial Exhibition. In 1999, Red Rocks solidified itself as the definitive small outdoor venue and was honorably awarded eleventh 'Best Small Outdoor Venue' by Pollstar magazine. So impressive was its achievement that they decided to rename the award in its name and removed it from subsequent competitions. Such incredible feats were a testament to how much of an impact Red Rocks had made on people's lives.
In October 2020, the process of constructing a new roof and structure for the stage kicked off. The Fountain Formation is clearly illustrated in the geological rocks that encircle this amphitheater. The area was initially referred to as the "Garden of the Angels" (1870s–1906) before being rechristened during Walker's tenure as the "Garden of the Titans" (1906–1928). Although the park was referred to as "Red Rocks" by locals, this name officially became its title when Denver acquired it in 1928. The rocks that surround the amphitheater are respectfully known as "Creation Rock" to the north, "Ship Rock" to the south, and eastward lies its renowned "Stage Rock". The venue has hosted an array of renowned artists and theatrical performers, including Mary Garden, The Beatles, Ringo Starr, Jimi Hendrix and Vanilla Fudge.
Soft Machin, Diana Ross & the Supremes, John Denver, Sonny & Cher, The Carpenters, Pat Boone, Seals & Crofts, Carole King, Blues Brothers, U2 and Depeche Mode also performed here. Red Rocks has been a go-to destination for recording live audio and video, as its stunning visuals make it the perfect backdrop. In 1987, the esteemed Senator Gary Hart of Colorado officially declared his candidacy for president at Red Rocks with a grand press conference. For a segment of the 1990 classic movie The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Red Rocks was selected as the ideal filming location. Some of the upcoming events and games at the venue are Dom Dolla, Mersiv, Tchami, Boogie T, Yeat, Subtronics, Bob Moses and Ben Bohmer, Boris Brejcha, The Marley Brothers, Sofi Tukker, Wiz Khalifa and more.
