  • Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, the magnificent Lyceum Theatre is situated on West 45th Street between Seventh and Sixth Avenues. Since its opening in 1903, the Lyceum Theatre is a living piece of Broadway heritage and has remained open as the oldest legitimate theater still operating within NYC. Masterfully constructed by Herts & Tallant in the luxurious Beaux-Arts style, the theater was created with renowned impresario Daniel Frohman's vision. Boasting 922 seats across three floors, the esteemed Shubert Organization runs this venue. In 1974, the facade of this building was officially recognized as a New York City landmark and in 1987 both the lobby and auditorium interiors were also designated as landmarks. Keeping true to its Beaux-Arts roots, the theater has retained much of its original design. A shimmering, glass-and-metal marquee adorns the 45th Street entrance of the building while a stunning colonnade boasts three elegant arched windows. Boasting a stunning groin-vaulted ceiling, exquisite murals above the entrances, and grand staircases ascending to the auditorium's balcony levels, our lobby is an awe-inspiring sight. The auditorium features an intricately adorned proscenium and boxes, yet the walls and ceiling are comparatively simple. In 1986, the grand apartment situated atop the lobby of the theatre was transformed into a hub for The Shubert Archives. This space had been formerly occupied by Frohman himself. The quickest route to the stage is through 152 West 46th Street, home to a ten-story wing designed by Herts & Tallant. Not only does this address to provide access to the backstage area, but it also houses all necessary dressing rooms and numerous other facilities! After the Frohman's Lyceum on Fourth Avenue had been closed in 1902, a new Lyceum opened to take its place. On November 2, 1903, The Proud Prince had its inaugural performance at the current theater. For over seven decades, the Shubert Organization has been proudly running the theater. During the late 1960s and '90s, the Lyceum was given to The Association of Producing Artists (APA), Phoenix Theatre, as well as the National Actors Theatre. After that, the Lyceum welcomed several noteworthy performances such as The Invention of Love in 2001, plus The Play What I Wrote and I Am My Wife in 2003. In 2006 they also staged a production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore. From the late 2000s onward, the Lyceum Theatre provided its audience with captivating experiences of plays and musicals including Inherit the Wind, Is He Dead?, Macbeth, Reasons to Be Pretty, and In the Next Room. Since the turn of the decade, The Lyceum Theatre has been a top destination for theatrical entertainment experiences. From Looped to Be More Chill, The Scottsboro Boys to Oh, Hello - and not forgetting A View from the Bridge, Venus in Fur, The Nance, Disgraced, and Fully Committed - I've had the pleasure of seeing many amazing productions. Plus who could forget classics such as The Realistic Joneses' captivating performances or A Christmas Carol's delightful story? Most recently however it was all about what goes wrong with 'The Play That Goes Wrong', yet still manages to draw you into its world! Moreover, the famous TV show Smash utilized this same theater in 2012 as a place to film their fictional Broadway musical Bombshell. On March 12, 2020, the theater was forced to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly a year and a half later on October 11th, 2021, it reopened with Is This A Room and Dana H playing in repertory - making for an unforgettable comeback! Hot off the heels of success in early 2022 came A Strange Loop, playing from then until January 2023.
