About Your Own Personal Exegesis

Playwriting alumna Julia May Jonas '12 proudly presented her world premiere of "Your Own Personal Exegesis" at Lincoln Center's esteemed Claire Tow Theater last year 2022. Unfolding the spiritual journey of a vibrant church youth group in the sanctuary hallways and rec rooms of a liberal parish, Your Own Personal Exegesis dives into their lives as they attend services, organize danceathons and start rehearsals for their grand passion play. As romantic feelings between members flare up and the power struggle intensifies, the passion takes on an entirely new definition. The play is a brilliantly humorous, coming-of-age eroticism and religious ecstasy, a bracingly funny yet subtly poignant story of spiritual rapture and sensuality. Brian as Savidu Geevaratne strives for dominance, and angles for power, Addie as Mia Pak searches to be transformed, and Beatrice as Annie Fang combats invisibility. As Kat Hannah Cabell the youth pastor gazes into her congregant Chris Cole Doman's troubled visage she is unable to look away. Director Annie Tippe brings this riveting play alive with its characters' compelling stories. Brian Cavanagh-Strong brings the soundtrack to Your Own Personal Exegesis with his unique original music. In February 2022, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist Julia May Jonas released her debut novel, "Vladimir". Jonas is the visionary behind Nellie Tinder, a theatre company. He has also crafted and produced All Long True American Stories - an undiscovered play cycle of five new pieces inspired by five celebrated male-experience plays. Rounding out the plays in rotation are: Time & Motivation for Fitness, Michigan Murders, Evelyn, Emily Climbs (Machine Méchant), Take Heart, and For Artists Only. Jonas has had her work created and showcased with esteemed theatres such as The Bushwick Starr, New Georges, Ars Nova, Target Margin, PRELUDE and so many more. Her aptitude for theatre is also visible in her teaching at Skidmore College where she instructs the art of theatre. Jonas is a true beacon of light in the theatre community, not only for her inspiring works but for her ability to remain unapologetically herself throughout all of it. Her groundbreaking works are garnering both critical acclaim and audience adoration alike, allowing us to look forward to future performances with anticipation. Show location: Lincoln Center Theater.
