Parade was an American musical written by Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. The show premiered on Broadway in 1998 and won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1999 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. It has since been produced internationally, including a critically acclaimed run at London’s Donmar Warehouse in 2003. Parade - The Play cast featured Brent Carver as Leo Frank, Carolee Carmello as Lucille Frank, Larry Keith as Jim Conley, Michael McGrath as Governor Slaton, and Vicki Lewis as Sally Slaton. The creative team included director Harold Prince, choreographer Pat Sikes-Garcia and orchestrations by Stephen Oremus. Parade tells the true story of Atlanta factory superintendent Leo Frank who is wrongfully accused of murdering thirteen-year-old Mary Phaganin in 1913 Georgia after she was found dead in his factory building. Through flashbacks from Leo's trial, we learn about his life back in Brooklyn where he falls in love with another outsider like him- Lucille Selig. After their marriage, they relocate to Atlanta where Leo works at the National Pencil Company and struggles with anti-semitism from society despite being viewed as a respected leader within the Jewish community. The parade features some very popular songs such as "All The Wasted Time", "This Is Not Over Yet”, “How Can I Call This Home", “What Am I Waiting For", “It's Hard to Speak My Heart" among many others that have established it as one of the most beloved musicals of its era. The show has been running regularly since its success on Broadway due to its production history with productions seen at various theatres including Mark Taper Forum (LA), Curran Theatre (SF) Royal Festival Hall (London), and St James Theatre (NZ). Apart from winning several awards including 4 Tonys it also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1998 which made it only the eighth musical to win this honor. Its messages of compassion, tolerance, and hope have also made it extremely relevant today.
