Eric Simonson's play, Lombardi, is based on David Maraniss' Pulitzer Prize-winning book When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. The play is a tribute to the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, who led his team to five NFL championships in seven years, including victories in the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi was known for his tough and demanding style, both on and off the field, but he was also a master motivator who inspired players and coaches alike with his passion for the game.
The show performed at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, from July 22 to July 28, 2010, as a pre-Broadway tryout. Dan Lauria and Judith Light played Vince and Marie Lombardi, respectively, in the play.
Lombardi received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the play for its insight into Lombardi's life and career, while others found it to be slow-paced and overly sentimental. However, most agreed that Lauria and Light gave strong performances in the lead roles. The play opened on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on October 21, 2010, and closed on June 19, 2011. Lauria and Light reprised their roles for the Broadway production.
The play received two Tony Award nominations, for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play (Lauria), but did not win either award.
