About Hamlet

Hamlet is a timeless classic written by the legendary William Shakespeare. It follows the form of a "revenge tragedy," in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father’s murderer, his uncle Claudius. Since its debut in 1603, it has been performed countless times around the world and is one of the most popular plays ever written. The play follows Prince Hamlet as he struggles to take revenge on his uncle for murdering his father and marrying his mother. The play contains some of Shakespeare's most famous lines such as "To be or not to be" and "This above all: to thine own self be true." It also includes themes such as betrayal, revenge, and mortality that still resonate with audiences today. The play has been adapted for film numerous times with award-winning performances by Laurence Olivier (1948), Kenneth Branagh, Hamlet 1996, and Ethan Hawke (2000). It has also been staged at various venues around the world including London's Globe Theatre, New York's Metropolitan Opera House, and Tokyo's Kabuki Theatre. In 2021, a new version of Hamlet was released starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role.

The production featured an all-star cast that included Annette Bening as Gertrude, Tom Hiddleston as Laertes, and Judi Dench as Polonius. Hamlet (Shakespeare)has won numerous awards over the years including Best Performance at The Olivier Awards for Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Prince Hamlet in 2021. In addition to awards, it has also been nominated for several Tony Awards throughout its history including Best Revival of a Play in 2009 and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in 2012. The play will continue to be performed throughout 2023 with upcoming productions scheduled at various venues around the world including The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester UK; The Stratford Festival in Ontario Canada; and The Sydney Opera House in Australia.
