Confederates - The Play Tickets

The Confederates depicts the tale of two ladies who are placed in what at first glance seem to be very dissimilar situations. Sara is a slave rebel who delivers intelligence to nearby Union forces from her master's home. Sandra is a professor of political science who must deal with sexism at a university where most students are white. The distinction between the past and the present becomes increasingly hazy as the play goes on, prompting the audience to consider how far we have come since 1865 and how far we still have to go. This drama digs into serious subjects with a sarcastic tone, never letting the audience forget the entire complexity of enslaved people—their humor, their sexuality, and their intelligence—alongside their anguish. Morisseau said, "I don't believe in the inhumanity of the enslaved." Confederates is a significant play by one of America's most intriguing authors, both in terms of its conceptual ambition and its deft handling of dramatically different tones. The Detroit Project, written by Dominique Morisseau, contains the plays Skeleton Crew, Paradise Blue, and Detroit '67. She is also the Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations book writer for the Broadway musical, for which she received a Tony nomination. Her work has been developed at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference. Morisseau is a graduate of The Public Theater Emerging Writers Group, Women's Project Lab, and Lark Playwrights Workshop. Her most recent production work was on the Showtime sitcom Shameless as a co-producer (3 seasons). She has won multiple honors, including the MacArthur "Genius" Grant, the NBTF August Wilson Playwriting Award, and the Steinberg Playwright Award.
