About American Buffalo

American Buffalo is a 1975 play by American playwright David Mamet that had its premiere in a showcase production at the Goodman Theatre, in Chicago. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and launched Mamet's career as a playwright. It tells the story of Teach (played by Robert Duvall in the 1996 film adaptation), a small-time crook who plots to rob a backroom poker game, and his partner Bobby, who becomes increasingly uneasy about their plan as it unfolds. The play is set in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1970s. The conversation in the play is occasionally terse and frequently filthy, which is a hallmark of Mamet's literary style. Teach frequently uses the word "cunt," and Don and Teach both frequently use the word "fuck." Also used are racial epithets. In contrast, the younger character Bobby only uses the word "fuck" under tremendous circumstances, such as right after getting beat up or during his final apologies to Donny. The characters' occasionally coarse lexicon, in addition, may be seen as psychologically necessary armor against their harsh environment; Mamet's profanity is not used for shock value, but rather is an integral component of his characters' "profane poetry," which, according to frequent collaborator Gregory Mosher, "worked the iambic pentameter out of the vernacular of the underclass." On November 23, 1975, Gregory Mosher's production of American Buffalo debuted in Chicago at the Goodman Theatre Stage II. The cast included William H. Macy as Bobby, Bernard Erhard as Teach, and J.J. Johnston (Donny) (Donny). The play had its Off-Broadway debut on January 26, 1976, at the Theatre at St. Clement's Church, and it ended on February 7, 1976. Mike Kellin, Michael Egan, and J. were part of the Gregory Mosher-directed cast, which also included Donny. Walsh, T. (Bobby). The Best New Play and Performance Obie Award went to the 1975 production (Mike Kellin). The play received the Best American Play Award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle in 1977. Best Direction of a Play and Best Scenic Design were the two Tony Awards for which the 1977 Broadway production was nominated (Santo Loquasto). It was nominated for four Drama Desk Awards, winning one for Outstanding Set Design and four others, including Outstanding New Play (American). For the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (Sam Rockwell), Best Direction of a Play (Neil Pepe), and Best Scenic Design of a Play, the 2022 revival was nominated (Scott Pask).
