Xanadu is a musical comedy with a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. It tells the story of two muses who come down to Earth to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny Malone. The show opened on Broadway in 2007 and has since gained a cult following around the world. It features some of the most memorable songs from the 70s including "Magic", "Suddenly", "Have You Never Been Mellow", and more. Xanadu has been performed in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Spain, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. The original Broadway cast featured Tony Award-winner Kerry Butler as Kira/Clio and Cheyenne Jackson as Sonny Malone. The show was nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical but lost out to Spring Awakening. However, it did win Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical (Douglas Carter Beane), Outstanding Music (Jeff Lynne & John Farrar), and Outstanding Lyrics (Jeff Lynne & John Farrar).
In 2013, Xanadu was revived in London's West End starring former Spice Girl Emma Bunton as Kira/Clio alongside Olivier Award-winning actor Daniel Evans as Sonny Malone. The production was well-received by critics and audiences alike with many praising its catchy tunes and witty dialogue. In 2017, it made its way back to Broadway with an all-star cast including Tony Award nominee Derek Klena as Sonny Malone and two-time Tony Award winner Mary Testa as Calliope/Melpomene.
