The Prom is a prom musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin, based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. Sklar and Beguelin also wrote the music and lyrics for The Wedding Singer, which premiered on Broadway in 2006. Martin is best known as a co-author of the book The Drowsy Chaperone. Prom was produced by Bruce Cohen, Barbara Whitman, Patrick Catullo, Roy Miller, Gabrielle Palitz, and Meri-Weinberg-Soler. The Prom Broadway Play is set on "Prom" night at the fictional Columbus High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1984. The story follows a group of students as they navigate their way through the complexities of teenage life and love. Prom is a coming-of-age story that celebrates self-discovery, acceptance, and inclusion. The Prom Broadway was opened at the Longacre Theatre on October 23, 2018, after previews that began on October 21.
The production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with a set design by Scott Pask, costume design by Ann Roth, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, and projection design by Zachary Borovay. The Prom musical cast features Caitlin Kinnunen as Emma Nolan, a high school senior who just wants to go to prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa Greene; Isabelle McCalla as Alyssa Greene, Emma's girlfriend; Josh Lamon as Sheldon Saperstein, the self-proclaimed "prom king"; Brooks Ashmanskas as Principal Tom Hawkins; Christopher Sieber as Mrs. Greene, Alyssa's mother; and Angie Schworer as Mrs. Wilkinson, Emma's guidance counselor. The show was nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical and won one for Best Original Score (Sklar and Beguelin). It was also nominated for five Drama Desk Awards, winning one for Outstanding Orchestrations (Jason Robert Brown and Greg Anthony Rassen).
When Pioneer Theatre Company debuts the Utah premiere of the high school-themed musical "The Prom" this month, there will be no rule in place that restricts the mention of homosexuality. Karen Azenberg, the artistic director of PTC and the director/choreographer of this season-ending production, playfully mentioned that the terms "gay" and "lesbian" are uttered approximately 400 times during the evening. "The Prom," which had its run in May 2023 at the Pioneer Memorial Theatre on the University of Utah campus, has long been on Azenberg's list of musicals to include in PTC's repertoire, she mentioned. After its successful 2018 Broadway premiere and a subsequent movie adaptation featuring Meryl Streep, James Corden, and Nicole Kidman, which premiered on Netflix in December 2020.
