Church Basement Ladies is a musical comedy, book by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke, with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen. It premiered in 2006 at the History Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. The musical is set in a rural Minnesota church basement kitchen in 1965 during the church's annual Ladies Aid Society pie sale. It follows a group of six women as they prepare food, argue, gossip, sing, and reflect on their lives. The musical was inspired by the book The Faith Club: A Journey Towards Understanding, by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. The musical has been produced regionally in the United States and Canada. It premiered in 2006 at the History Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota, and played at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in 2007. The musical opened off-Broadway at the Downstairs Theatre at St. Luke's Theatre on October 28, 2009, and closed on January 3, 2010. Church Basement Ladies was nominated for two Outer Critics Circle Awards, Best Book of a Musical and Best Score of a Musical. In 2015, a sequel, Church Basement Ladies 2: The Second Helping, premiered at the History Theatre.
