Reefer Madness: The Musical opened in 1998 as a satire of the 1936 cult classic propaganda film Reefer Madness. The original film was created as a way to scare people away from smoking marijuana, but the musical comedy takes a more humorous approach, poking fun at the over-the-top hysteria of the film. The story follows high school students who get caught up in the world of reefer after one of their classmates starts selling the drug.
Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney both attended the Canadian premiere, which Hart House Theatre produced in September 2006. On June 9–18, 2011, the performance will make its return to Canada at The Lower Ossington Theatre in Toronto. On July 24, 2008, the program made its Australian debut in Sydney, and on March 24, 2009, it had its UK premiere in London.
A version of the musical including an all-star benefit concert was performed at New World Stages on April 20, 2014. Alan Cumming, Christian Campbell, Thomas Dekker, Andrea McArdle, Lesli Margherita, Harry S. Murphy, John Kassir, Amy Spanger, Jenna Leigh Green, and Lea Delaria were among the cast members. Ilana Ransom Toeplitz is the director, Shoshana Feinstein is the producer, and the production is being done to raise money for the BabyQuest charity.
While Reefer Madness: The Musical is definitely a comedy, it also has a message about the way that marijuana is portrayed in the media and society. The musical shows how reefer can be used responsibly and how the fear surrounding it is often exaggerated.
