Ragtime is a musical with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name written by E.L. Doctorow. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1998, and since then it has been performed in many venues around the world. It tells the story of three different families living in turn-of-the-century America and their struggles to find a place for themselves in a rapidly changing society. The original Broadway production of Ragtime opened at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts (now known as the Lyric Theatre) on January 18th, 1998, and ran until January 16th, 2000. The show was directed by Frank Galati, with choreography by Graciela Daniele, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Santo Loquasto, lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, sound design by Acme Sound Partners, orchestrations by William David Brohn and musical direction/conducting/vocal arrangements by David Loud.
The cast included Brian Stokes Mitchell as Coalhouse Walker Jr., Audra McDonald as Sarah, Peter Friedman as Tateh, Marin Mazzie as Mother, Mark Jacoby as Father, Judy Kaye as Emma Goldman, and Robert Westenberg as Younger Brother. Ragtime won four Tony Awards including Best Score (Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens), Best Book (Terrence McNally), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Audra McDonald), and Best Orchestrations (William David Brohn). It also received two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Music (Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens) and Outstanding Lyrics (Lynn Ahrens). In total, it was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards!
