The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes is an annual musical holiday stage show presented at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The 90-minute show features traditional and contemporary Christmas carols, dance numbers, and sketches. The show is produced by Rockefeller Center Productions. The Christmas Spectacular was first staged in 1933 as a benefit for the then-new Radio City Music Hall. The first public performance was on December 21, 1933. The show was conceived by Edward Villella, who also choreographed the show from its inception until 1939. In 1935, the show moved from a one-time event to an annual production. The show was put on hiatus from 1942 until 1950 due to World War II and the financial problems it caused.
Under Linda Haberman's direction, a brand-new version of the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular tour was revised, created, and choreographed in 2007 to commemorate the Christmas show's 75th anniversary. The Radio City Rockettes Magical Journey was the title of the performance in 2011. In addition to "The Parade of Wooden Soldiers" and "The Living Nativity," the production included an updated 3DLIVE scene and new musical numbers. In 2013, an updated finale called "Snow" took the place of "Let Christmas Shine." In 2014, Julie Branam was hired as the show's director and choreographer. In 2021, "Snow" was added back to the program, following "Rag Dolls" and before the Living Nativity scene. In 2018, the "Snow" number was replaced with a new, updated finale called "Christmas Lights." This New York Christmas tradition is sure to create lasting, precious memories.
