About Pippin

Pippin is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. It was first performed in 1972 at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway, where it won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The show follows the story of Pippin, a young prince who embarks on a quest to find meaning in his life. The musical features an eclectic mix of styles, ranging from classical to pop and rock, as well as innovative staging techniques such as acrobatics and aerial stunts. The original production of Pippin opened in October 1972 with Ben Vereen playing the lead role of Pippin and Bob Fosse directing. It ran for 1,944 performances before closing in June 1977. After its initial run on Broadway, Pippin went on to become one of the most successful touring productions in history with over 4,000 performances around the world. In 2013, Pippin made its return to Broadway with a revival directed by Diane Paulus which featured an all-star cast including Patina Miller, Matthew James Thomas, Andrea Martin, and more. This production won four Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and was also nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards. In addition to its success on stage, Pippin has also gained recognition through its various recordings over the years. The original cast recording was released in 1972 and peaked at number 73 on the Billboard 200 chart while also receiving two Grammy Award nominations for Best Original Cast Show Album and Best Score From An Original Cast Show Album. A deluxe edition featuring additional songs from the 2013 revival was released in 2014 which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned two Grammy Award nominations for Best Musical Theater Album and Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Capella (for “Morning Glow”).
