Once On This Island is a musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. The show originally opened on Broadway in October 1990 and ran for 469 performances. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The musical is set on an island in the Caribbean Sea, which is divided between the poor peasants who live on one side, and the wealthy landowners who live on the other. One of the peasants, Ti Moune, rescues a wealthy boy named Daniel from a car accident. She falls in love with him, even though she knows that their stations in life would keep them apart. The two eventually get married, but when Daniel becomes very ill, Ti Moune makes a deal with the island gods to save his life. She agrees to give up her life in exchange for his, but Daniel wakes up from his coma and begs her to stay with him.
The gods agree to let them be together, and they live happily ever after. The original Broadway cast included LaChanze as Ti Moune, Jerry Dixon as Daniel Beauxhomme, Kenita Miller as Andrea De La Torre/Asaka, Lillias White as Mama Euralie/Erzulie Fréda Dahomey, and Cynda Williams as Andrea's Mother/Papa Ge. The current revival cast includes Hailey Kilgore as Ti Moune, Alex Newell as Asaka/Andrea De La Torre, Merle Dandridge as Erzulie Fréda Dahomey/Mama Euralie, Quentin Earl Darrington as Agwe/Armand Jean du Plessis Cardinal Richelieu, and Kenita Miller-Tolate as Papa Ge/Andrea's Mother. Once On This Island has been revived twice on Broadway- first in 2017, and again in 2018. It has also been produced Off-Broadway and in regional theatres across the country.
