Merrily We Roll Along is a 1981 American musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. It is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The story follows Franklin Shepard, a successful composer-producer-director who abandons his friends and artistic integrity in pursuit of commercial success in Hollywood. It was one of Sondheim's most ambitious works, featuring an intricate score that incorporates elements from jazz, ragtime, classical music, and popular songs of the era. The musical opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on November 16th, 1981 but closed after only sixteen performances due to mixed reviews from critics. Despite its short run on Broadway, Merrily We Roll Along has gone on to become one of Stephen Sondheim’s most beloved works.
