Gypsy is a musical based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and was a project of producer David Merrick and actress Ethel Merman. It’s a classic story of an ambitious stage mother who pushes her daughters into show business, with the ultimate goal of making them stars. The musical first opened on Broadway in 1959 and starred Ethel Merman as Rose, the mother, and Jack Klugman as Herbie, her love interest. Gypsy has since been revived multiple times on Broadway, with notable revivals starring Angela Lansbury in 1974 and Bernadette Peters in 2003. The original cast featured some of Broadway's most talented performers such as Jack Klugman, Charles Nelson Reilly, Sandra Church, JoAnne Worley, and more!
The musical won five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Performance by Featured Actress in a Musical for Church. In addition to its success on Broadway, it has also been adapted for film twice - once in 1962 starring Rosalind Russell as Rose, and again in 1993 starring Bette Midler.
