Fisherman's Friends: The Musical tells the inspiring, true-to-life tale of the folk music group Fisherman's Friends and portrays their story in a lively stage production that shares many similarities with the hit 2019 movie adaptation. This is a tale of camaraderie and a feel-good voyage about friendship, community, and music that is based on the story of Cornwall's buoy band. It was based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations. The group of Cornish fishermen when came together to sing, then was discovered by a music manager on a trip from London who said that "than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame, they must learn more about life". Nobody, least of all the fishermen, dreamt that while they sing the traditional working songs it would culminate on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury - an unexpected and remarkable conclusion.
It was such a hit when it opened in 2019 that its box office records were broken throughout Cornwall with its critically acclaimed musical hook line and sinker! Based on the Screenplay by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard, and Piers Ashworth Directed by James Grieve, and the writing of Amanda Whittington, Fisherman's Friends: The Musical came to life. It was also with Dan Samson's captivating sound design, and Johanna Town’s evocative lighting design - not forgetting Jim Arnold for the brilliant casting and music which smashed box office records in Cornwall. At the start of 2021, the musical debuted to an international audience at Cornwall Playhouse in Truro's Hall for Cornwall. On September 12th, 2021, the full cast for James Grieve's production was revealed. An illustrious line-up of star cast graces the stage, including James Gaddas (Coronation Street and Billy Elliot the Musical), Parisa Shahmir (Mamma Mia!), Robert Duncan (Drop the Dead Donkey), Anton Stephans (The X Factor) and Susan Penhaligon (Bouquet of Barbed Wire).
Previews began on the thirteenth with its official opening night coming a few days later on October 18th. The production served as the inaugural performance to open the theatre after its lavish £20 million refurbishment.
