Set during the Cold War, the musical tells the story of a love triangle between two chess players - the American Freddie Trumper and the Russian Anatoly Sergievsky - and a Hungarian refugee named Florence Vassy. The original London cast featured Elaine Paige, Murray Head, and Tommy Korberg, and it was later adapted for Broadway in 1988, starring Judy Kuhn, Philip Casnoff, and David Carroll. The show has since been performed in over 30 countries and translated into multiple languages, with productions in places such as Japan, Germany, and Russia. Chess - The Musical has also spawned several successful albums, including the original London cast recording, which features hits like "One Night in Bangkok," "I Know Him So Well," and "Anthem." The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK charts and earning a gold certification.
