Aladdin is a musical based on the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name with a book by Chad Beguelin, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Beguelin. The musical opened in Seattle in 2011 before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014. Since then, Aladdin has gone on to become one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time! The show follows the story of Aladdin, an impoverished young man living in Agrabah who falls in love with Princess Jasmine. He soon discovers that he is being pursued by Jafar, the Grand Vizier of Agrabah who is plotting to take over the kingdom. With help from a magical Genie, Aladdin sets out to save his beloved city and win Jasmine's heart. The original production featured Adam Jacobs as Aladdin and Courtney Reed as Jasmine alongside James Monroe Iglehart as Genie.
Iglehart won a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role for his performance. The cast also included Jonathan Freeman as Jafar and Don Darryl Rivera as Iago. Since its initial run, Aladdin has been performed around the world including in Australia, Japan, Germany, and Canada. It has also been translated into several languages including Spanish, German, and Japanese. In addition to its success on stage, it was adapted into a live-action feature film directed by Guy Ritchie which was released in 2019 starring Will Smith as Genie and Mena Massoud as Aladdin. In 2021, it was announced that Aladdin would return to Broadway for 8 performances only beginning in 2023 at New Amsterdam Theatre!
