The Rockettes have been one of the most iconic dance troupes in history, performing a visually stunning and acrobatic show since their founding in 1925. Initially created as part of the chorus line for musicals, they were soon recruited by producer and choreographer Russell Markert to perform in Rockefeller Center’s Radio City Music Hall. The troupe quickly became an icon of American entertainment, due to their intricate and daring choreography, which often included simultaneously synchronizing with dozens of other dancers and doing complex lifts or jumps. At its peak in the late 1950s, the original troupe featured over 100 members who performed shows all around the world. Since then, the roster has waned to just 36 performers who continue to tour on international stages every year. The show has been created and directed by a series of creative masters including Robert Mosley, Diane Walker, Emily Roeser-Heisey, Wade Robson, Lucillepettisotero, Kim Durso-Howard, Robert Joffrey, and George Balanchine Jr., amongst others.
Their productions have earned them several prestigious awards such as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography (1976) and three Emmy Awards from 1978–1980 for Outstanding Variety Musical Series throughout its history. The Rockettes have had many notable members over their long history including Faye Looney Kiser and Florene Lillian Poteat who have both been inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame for their extraordinary talents and Rockettes performances with the group. They’ve also received acclaim from music icons like Elton John and Rod Stewart who’ve watched them perform live at Radio City Music Hall as well as from celebrities like Bette Midler who described her experience watching them as a dream come true! They continue to bring their unique blend of music, dance, and spectacle to millions each year. The Rockettes have been featured on numerous TV shows throughout their history, most recently appearing in NBC’s The Voice and the 2019 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They've also had cameos on popular shows such as Glee and Saturday Night Live. The group has been invited to perform special guest appearances at award shows like the Academy Awards (2009), the Tony Awards (1996 and 2010), and the Emmy Awards (2004). In addition, they’ve done international tours tending shows from Dublin, Ireland to Zurich Switzerland. The Rockettes have also released a series of behind-the-scene short films showcasing their rehearsals and performances. Two of those shot in 2013 were featured at national film festivals including Raindance Film Festival in London, England, and the Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival in Massachusetts.
