EVIDENCE, A Dance Company, based in Brooklyn, New York and founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985, is dedicated to fusing traditional African dance with cutting-edge choreography and spoken word. EVIDENCE offers a singular perspective on the challenges, tragedies, and victories of people via their work. In addition to introducing audiences to the beauty of ancient African forms and rhythms, Brown employs movement to emphasize the value of community in African American culture. He is a supporter of the expansion of the African American dance community and plays a significant role in inspiring new dancers to choreograph and pursue dance as a career.
Demand for Brown's choreography is tremendous. Ailey II, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Jeune Ballet d'Afrique Noire, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Philadanco, and others are among the dance companies for which he has created works. He was the choreographer for Regina Taylor's critically acclaimed show Crowns, for which he received a AUDELCO Award. "I hope that viewing the painting would make people feel happier. Modern dance, theater, and kinetic storytelling are three mediums I'm interested in using to share viewpoints. These perspectives should be evident in my work, adds Brown.
Currently, EVIDENCE travels to about 25 towns both domestically and abroad. The group has performed, given master courses, and led lectures and demonstrations for audiences of all ages in Cuba, Brazil, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, and Canada. EVIDENCE provides cultural linkages and arts instruction to regional populations who previously lacked these opportunities. The company has an annual viewership of around 25,000.
