The internationally renowned Richard Caruthers Little, OC was born on November 26th, 1938. In the bustling city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Little arrived into this world as the middle son of three brothers. During World War II, Lawrence Peniston Little - the father of our hero - proudly served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. After that, he kept on giving back to his country by working for the Department of Veterans Affairs until his ultimate demise in 1959. Elizabeth Maud Wilson, his mother, was a stay-at-home mom. As a third-generation Canadian, his father's heritage is English, and his mother's Irish. Tracing his maternal roots, he is a direct descendant of John Willson--the Speaker of the 5th Parliament in Upper Canada during the 1820s. William Carruthers Little, his paternal great-grandfather, demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and represented Canada's interests in the House of Commons from 1867 to 1881 as a Liberal-Conservative Member.
During his formative years, he attended Lisgar Collegiate Institute. When he was in his early teenage years, he joined forces with Geoff Scott – another up-and-coming impressionist (who later turned politician) – to accurately imitate the voices of noteworthy Canadian politicians like Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and Ottawa mayor Charlotte Whitton. He is known for his impressive impressionist techniques for personalities like Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, and John Wayne as well as his voice acting and his success in the comedy scene. Little is famously known as the "Man of a Thousand Voices," having released nine comedy albums and being featured on numerous TV shows, including three HBO specials. Throughout the 70s, he was a go-to celebrity for shows such as "Hollywood Squares," "The Judy Garland Show," and even hosted "The Tonight Show" a remarkable twelve times.
In 2017, Little released his captivating memoir Little by Little: People I Have Known and Been. This book offers an in-depth look at the people he's encountered throughout his life, as well as stories of personal growth and reflection. This year, CBS News Sunday Morning featured Little in an interview; during the feature, he joyfully mentioned that this was his first time appearing on network television in 30 years and prayed for it to be a success! In 2018, he featured himself in the documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead which focused on Orson Welles' final movie The Other Side of the Wind. Despite being part of the original 1970 cast, Little had to leave due to external commitments, and his scenes were redone with Peter Bogdanovich replacing him. The Other Side of the Wind features Little in a significant role as a guest at the party. In 2022, the comedian had an autobiographical solo show entitled "Rich Little Live" in Las Vegas
