Her next role was that of Sarah Norman in Children of a Lesser God, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. In 1988, Matlin appeared in William Friedkin's drama feature Running on Empty opposite River Phoenix and Judd Hirsch. In the 1990s, Matlin had roles on television shows such as Reasonable Doubts, Picket Fences and Walker, Texas Ranger. She also appeared in a number of independent films, including The Linguini Incident (1991), Where the Day Takes You (1992) and Cake (2005). In 2002, Matlin made her Broadway debut, appearing in the Tony Award-winning revival of The Seven Year Itch opposite Matthew Broderick. In 2007, she published her autobiography, I'll Scream Later. Matlin is an advocate for the deaf community and has served as the National Association of the Deaf's celebrity spokesperson since 1987.
