About Ligue Nationale D'improvisation

The Ligue Nationale d'Improvisation (LNI) is a cultural institution in Quebec, founded in 1977 in Montreal by Robert Gravel and Yvon Leduc. Inspired by ice hockey, the LNI revolutionized theatre by introducing the concept of "improvisation matches," where two teams of performers compete in a simulated hockey rink under the supervision of a referee. Each team consists of six improv players—three women and three men—along with a coach. The matches take place over three periods of 30 minutes, with improvisations ranging from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. The audience plays an active role by voting for the team they believe performed best after each round. This interactive approach quickly won over spectators, turning the LNI into a major cultural event in Quebec. Over the years, the format has been adapted in various countries, solidifying the league’s influence in the world of theatrical improvisation.

Over the decades, the LNI has showcased an array of talented artists who have left a lasting impact on its history. Notable figures include Sophie Caron, Pierre Curzi, Marcel Sabourin, and Robert Lepage, all of whom have contributed to the league’s success and popularity. Their performances have been widely praised by both audiences and critics, further solidifying the LNI’s place in the theatrical world. To recognize excellence in improvisation, the league introduced several awards, such as the Pierre Curzi Trophy for Rookie of the Year, the Marcel Sabourin Trophy for the most respected player among peers, the Robert Gravel Trophy for the best player of the season, and the Charade Cup, the ultimate symbol of improvisational supremacy. These distinctions highlight the LNI’s commitment to celebrating and encouraging artistic talent while pushing the boundaries of improv theatre.

In 2025, the LNI will celebrate its 48th anniversary with a series of special events across Quebec. Improvisation matches will be held at prestigious venues such as Théâtre Saint-Denis in Montreal, Grand Théâtre de Québec, and Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. These performances will feature a mix of veteran players and new talent, creating an exciting blend of experience and innovation. In addition, the LNI will host workshops and masterclasses for the public and aspiring improvisers, reinforcing its educational mission. These initiatives aim to strengthen the league’s relationship with the community while ensuring that the art of improvisational theatre is passed down to future generations. As the LNI approaches five decades of existence, its impact on Quebecois theatre and beyond remains stronger than ever, offering audiences a unique, interactive, and entertaining form of performance art.
