Kodō is a professional taiko drumming troupe. It was founded in 1981 by Roy and Craig Yoshida, who were seeking to bring the traditional art of taiko drumming to a wider audience. The group's name comes from the Japanese word for "heartbeat".
Kodō has performed all over the world, including at the opening ceremony of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The group has also been featured on several television shows and movies, including the Academy Award-winning film "Babel".
Kodō's performances are a blend of traditional and contemporary taiko styles. The group often uses unconventional instruments, such as bicycles and suitcases, in their performances.
The troupe has released several albums, including "Kodo: Live at the Acropolis", "Kodo: One Earth Tour", and "Kodo: Ikari".
Kod's operations are managed by three groups. The corporate body responsible for administering member pay, employment, tour scheduling, and general management is known as Kitamaesen. Otodaiku oversees the group's recording rights, as well as the creation and retailing of the musical instruments utilized in Kod's performances. The Kodo Cultural Foundation oversees the group's charitable endeavors, including the Sado Island Taiko Center.
In addition to receiving the Japanese Foreign Ministry Award for their cultural accomplishments through the Earth Celebration event on Sado Island, Kod got the MIDEM Music Video (Long Form) Award at the 3rd International Visual Music Festival in Cannes in 1994. In 2012, they also won the Matsuo Performing Arts Award for Japanese Music.
