Derren Brown is an English mentalist, multi-award winning master illusionist (who could be a Jedi Master!), painter, and author. He is known for his television specials, which combine mentalism, suggestion, misdirection, and showmanship. Brown does not claim to possess any supernatural powers and the majority of his effects are achieved through simple psychological techniques. He began performing in 1992, making his television debut with Derren Brown: Mind Control in 2000. Since then, he has produced several other multi award-winning master of mind control and psychological illusion shows for stage and television. His 2006 stage show Something Wicked This Way Comes and his 2012 show Infamous were both critical and commercial successes. He received two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment for his performances in Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012). In addition to his work as a performer, Brown has written books on the psychology of deception, confidence tricks, and persuasion. He has also pioneered research into the field of applied psychology and human behavior.
Derren Brown was born in the Croydon area of London on 27 February 1971. He was brought up in a Christian family and attended Whitgift School, Croydon. Brown's parents divorced when he was ten and he subsequently lived with his mother and stepfather, a company director for Unilever. Brown began to develop his interest in magic at the age of eleven when he received a copy of Magic for Dummies by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas. He began to perform magic shows for friends and family, charging them £1 per person. At the age of eighteen, Brown moved out of his mother's house and began to live independently. He enrolled at the University of Bristol to study law, but dropped out after two weeks. He then attended the Central School of Speech and Drama, where he studied acting. After graduation, Brown began to perform magic professionally. He has since toured extensively with his stage show, Something Wicked This Way Comes. He has also appeared on television shows such as The Paul O'Grady Show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
