About Cirque du Soleil: Kurios

Kurios is a Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil touring production that premiered on April 24, 2014, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada under the full title of Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities. The show is set in the late 19th century with the help of Guy Lalibert and tells the story of a scientist who discovers "the world's most unusual scientist" who has invented (like Alexander Graham Bell) a machine that can transform the impossible into reality and alternate yet familiar past. And with characters like Klara the Telegraph of the Invisible ( A hoop-skirted receiver of alpha waves) curio cabinet, the seeker. The cast includes acrobats, contortionists, aerialists, musicians, and clowns. Kurios has been described as "a mix of steam punk and Victorian-era aesthetics" with flashing lights. The show's set design is inspired by the world's fairs of the late 19th century, and its costumes are a mix of period clothing and futuristic designs. The title Kurios is derived from the Greek word κύριος (kyrios), meaning "lord" or "master". The audience embarks on an exciting journey with the seeker that is convinced that there exists a hidden, invisible world and discovers curious and marvelous artifacts along the way - unlocking a door to a world of wonders and a makeshift mechanical world! In 1997, Cirque du Soleil graced London Theater prestigious Royal Albert Hall with its breathtaking performances.

The show was originally slated to premiere in March 2014, but its debut was postponed due to technical difficulties. Kurios made its world premiere on April 24, 2014, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Kurios is written and directed by Michel Laprise, with a score composed by Benoit Jutras. The show's creative team also includes acrobatic designer Les 7 doigts de la main, who has worked on several Cirque du Soleil productions. Kurios is Cirque du Soleil's 33rd original production since 1984. It is the company's first show to be set in the past, and its first show to feature a machine as a central character. Kurios was nominated for the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design in a Play. In October 2015, it was announced that Kurios would be touring the United States in 2016. The tour began in Atlanta, Georgia on April 14, 2016, and is scheduled to end in San Francisco, California on December 31, 2016. Kurios has received generally positive reviews from critics. The Hollywood Reporter called it "a visually sumptuous production", and Variety described it as "visually lavish" and "stunning". The New York Times wrote that the show is "a feast for the eyes", and The Washington Post called it "a dazzling display of physical prowess and technical wizardry". However, some reviewers were less enthusiastic about the show's story. The Montreal Gazette wrote that Kurios "suffers from an overabundance of ideas", and The Globe and Mail called the plot "thin".

Despite mixed reviews, Kurios was a commercial success, grossing over $US 100 million in its first year of touring. The Toronto Star showered praise on Kurios, calling it "Cirque du Soleil's strongest act in years" and hailing critic Richard Ouzounian for his excellent review. The Gazette gushed that Kurios was a classic, noting it ran like clockwork and could go on indefinitely. The Globe and Mail lauded it as a "breathtakingly mesmerizing production - kinetic, whimsical and astounding". Daniel Gauthier and circus producer Gilles Ste-Croix were rewarded with funds to present a show based on the groundbreaking discovery of Canada by Jacques Cartier. Kurios made its debut in San Francisco to rave reviews, with the San Francisco Chronicle declaring it "the best Cirque du Soleil show in a long time". In honor of its 30th anniversary, Cirque du Soleil created a dark and captivating realm rather than the vibrant visual masterpiece they're renowned for. As The San Jose Mercury News noted, this was an unexpected yet remarkable decision. According to Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune, Cirque has made a remarkable comeback with an astonishingly beautiful, intricate, and powerful show that encapsulates its unique potential for transformation. Above all else, this is not something one should miss! What's more, the enchanting vocals by Greek chanteuse Eirini Tornesaki make this composition even more alluring.
