About America's Got Talent

America's Got Talent (often abbreviated as AGT) is a televised American talent show competition, and is part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. The program is produced by Fremantle USA and Syco Entertainment, distributed by the former, and broadcast on NBC. It is the first global edition of the franchise, after Britain's Got Talent and Ireland's Got Talent became successful. The show features a variety of acts competing in front of a live audience and judges, for a grand prize of $1 million. The show debuted on June 21, 2006, and its first season won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. As of 2020, a total of fifteen seasons have aired. Auditions are open to acts of any age and type with the exceptions of live animals (except for trained domesticated pets), the use of laser pointers, and potentially dangerous acts such as fire breathing.

The format has varied in some global editions; America's Got Talent maintained the same general format as the original British show, except for a few elements. The judging panel consists of at least four judges, with various music industry professionals having served on the panel over the course of its fifteen seasons. The original panel in the first two seasons consisted of David Hasselhoff, Brandy Norwood, and Piers Morgan. Sharon Osbourne replaced Norwood in season three, and Howie Mandel replaced Morgan in season five. In 2006, Osbourne was replaced by her husband Ozzy Osbourne for one season. Mel B replaced Osbourne as a judge in season twelve, while Heidi Klum joined the panel in season thirteen. Klum was replaced by Simon Cowell in season fourteen, before Mandel, Mel B, and Cowell all returned for season fifteen.

The show's hosts have been Regis Philbin (2006), Jerry Springer (2007–2008), and Nick Cannon (2009–2016, 2018). Springer was replaced by Tyra Banks for season twelve, before he returned as host for season thirteen. Cannon left the show after eight seasons and was replaced by Terry Crews for season fourteen, before returning to host season fifteen. The winner is determined by America's vote and announced at the live finale, which features performances by the Top 10 finalists. From seasons one to eleven, the finalists were split into two groups of five or six acts each with each group performing on a separate night before the final voting begins; in season twelve, the number of finalists was increased to fifteen, with three finalists eliminated following the first live show and ten remaining for the second show. In seasons thirteen and fourteen, four finalists were eliminated each week until only the winner remained. Season fifteen returned to the previous format of ten finalists.
