Majah Hype, a comedian, credits his secret sauce to his passions for forging strong community connections and advancing the representation of Caribbean ancestry in popular culture. Beginning in 2012, the raspy-voiced comedian affectionately referred to as "the Caribbean King of Comedy" took social media by storm with his brand of humor, which he refers to as "reality comedy." He did this by creating and appearing in online sketches that featured characters who made fun of various stereotypes related to Caribbean, Latin, and African-American cultures. Majah does stand-up comedy performances spontaneously, delivering punchlines based on universal experiences shared by Afro-Caribbean people.
Majah was designed from the beginning to delight large throngs of people. The hardworking performer known for imitating Caribbean accents, Majah, was born Nigel Joseph in the Caribbean and raised in Brooklyn, New York, as the oldest of three children with his mother. He honed his skills by winning his family's holiday talent shows by telling jokes or playing seven instruments, primarily the alto saxophone, clarinet, and trombone. Normally, Majah would get ideas for his comedic performances from watching Redd Foxx on "Sanford & Son," Oliver Samuels, a comedian from Jamaica, Richard Pryor, Martin Lawrence, Jerry Seinfeld, and Eddie Murphy.
Majah's career seemed to be destined to be in music for a while. Majah began DJing while she was a junior in high school. One of his DJ friends gave him the name "Majah" because he knew the comic would go far in the world. In the hallways, Majah started hawking cassette cassettes with Hip-Hop and Caribbean music to his fellow students. Majah expanded his repertoire of skills by producing singles for a variety of Jamaican and Caribbean musicians, including Gyptian and Torres Riley. Majah had to put his aspirations of mesmerizing audiences on hold almost immediately due to the reality of becoming a parent at the age of 19.
After losing his job, he started using Instagram to create his own memes and eventually 15-second videos. Over Labor Day Weekend, one particular post comparing the top vehicles in Caribbean culture went viral. As Majah's fan base began to expand rapidly, the comedian decided to dedicate himself full-time to his passion of making people laugh. He left his day job and didn't return.
Majah's goal is to continue serving as a spokesperson for his Caribbean ancestry as his fan base grows. Every Labor Day, Majah puts on a stand-up show in his native Brooklyn at the King's Theater. 2014 saw the beginning of his own production firm, Hype Media and Films. The ambitious comedian played five different characters in the independent comedy "Foreign Minds Think Alike," which he wrote, acted in, and directed two years later. Majah intends to establish Hearts of Comedy for Majah Hype, his own foundation, this year.
