Louis Alfred Székely better known as Louis C.K., is an American stand-up comedian, screenwriter, actor, and filmmaker. He began his career as a comedian and writer in the 1990s, writing jokes for several comedy shows before gaining prominence through his work on The Chris Rock Show. He is widely respected amongst comedians and is known for creating and starring in the Emmy Award-winning sitcom Louie. He has also appeared in numerous films, including Pootie Tang (2001) and American Hustle (2013). In 2016, he was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, which resulted in the cancellation of his upcoming film I Love You, Daddy and the end of his deal with FX. Louis C.K. was born on September 12, 1967, in Washington, D.C., to Mary Louise (née Davis), an early childhood education professor, and Luis Székely, an economist. His father is of Hungarian descent, while his mother is of Irish Catholic background. C.K.'s paternal grandfather, Dr. Charles Louis Székely Simon, was born in Hungary and worked as a surgeon in the United States.
C.K.'s maternal grandmother, Margaret Daly, was born in New York City to Irish immigrants. C.K.'s parents met at Harvard University, where his father was studying for his Ph.D. and his mother was completing her master's degree. They married shortly after graduation and moved to Mexico, where C.K.'s father taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. C.K. has three sisters: Helen, Liz, and Mary Louise. He was raised in a middle-class Catholic family in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, where he was a basket case who excelled at math and science but was often bullied. He grew up in a diverse neighborhood and has said that his experience growing up as a minority shaped his comedy. He began performing stand-up comedy when he was 16 years old. He cites George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, and Woody Allen as his early comedic influences. He also appeared on an amateur night at the now-closed Boston Comedy Club. C.K. stated that his set was mostly cursed words and that the audience responded well. HE moved to New York City after dropping out of college in 1985. He worked various odd jobs, including as a busboy, construction worker, and clerk at a pet store. He also started performing stand-up comedy in various clubs around the city.
In 1989, he was hired as a writer for the short-lived Carol Leifer sitcom Lucky Louie. He also wrote for Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Dana Carvey Show. In 1996, he created and starred in his first pilot, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, which was developed into a successful Comedy Central series. In 2001, C.K. wrote, directed, and starred in the black-and-white film Pootie Tang. The film was a critical and commercial failure but has since attained cult status. From 2006 to 2008, he starred in and wrote the HBO comedy series, Lucky Louie. The show was controversial for its depiction of working-class life and explicit language but was praised by some critics for its realism. In 2010, he created and starred in the FX comedy series Louie. The show is loosely based on his own life and has been praised for its innovative storytelling and creative visuals. In 2012, he directed and starred in the film Hilarious, which aired on HBO. The following year, he directed and starred in the black comedy web series Horace and Pete. He has been nominated for numerous awards, including 22 Primetime Emmy Awards (winning 5), 2 Golden Globe Awards, and a Peabody Award. In 2015, he was named the funniest man alive by Rolling Stone magazine. His Chewed Up Oh My God Live tour at The Beacon Theater in Carnegie Hall was also a success.
