Joel Edward McHale is an American actor, comedian and television host. McHale is best known for hosting The Soup and portraying Jeff Winger on the NBC comedy series Community. He has appeared in films such as Spider-Man 2 (2004), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and A Merry Friggin' Christmas (2014).
Joel McHale was born in Rome, Italy, where his father, Jack McHale, worked as Dean of Students at Loyola University Rome Center. His mother, Marie (née Cataldi), is a former teacher and native of Connecticut. He has two older siblings, a sister named Elizabeth and a brother named John. McHale and his family moved back to the United States in 1982, when Joel was 10 years old. They settled in Seattle, Washington.
McHale attended Mercer Island High School, where he played football and was a swimmer. He obtained his bachelor's degree in History from the University of Washington in 1995. While at the University of Washington, McHale very briefly belonged to the Theta Chi fraternity. After graduating, he worked as a development assistant for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member station KCTS-TV. McHale later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a production assistant on the E! True Hollywood Story series and occasionally directed, wrote, and produced comedy sketches for the website Super Deluxe.
In 2001, McHale auditioned for the role of Jimmy Olsen in J.J. Abrams' television series pilot for Smallville, but he lost out to Aaron Ashmore. In 2002, McHale guest-starred as a cast member on Will & Grace and also appeared as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He has made guest appearances on television programs such as Just Shoot Me!, CSI: Miami, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Monk, The Office, Nip/Tuck and Pushing Daisies. In 2006, he appeared in Spider-Man 2 as Mr. Jacks, a bank manager who is revealed to be the mysterious villain Sandman's boss.
In 2007, McHale hosted The Soup, a weekly television show that parodies celebrity gossip shows such as Access Hollywood and The Insider. On the show, McHale makes humorous commentary on popular culture and current events. He has also appeared as a guest star on an episode of the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother, in which he played Ted Mosby's boss.
In 2011, McHale began starring in the NBC comedy series Community as Jeff Winger, a lawyer who enrolls at a community college after it is revealed that his degree is fake. The show ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. In 2012, he hosted the Independent Spirit Awards and appeared as himself in the film Ted. In 2013, McHale hosted the ESPY Awards.
In 2014, McHale hosted the web series Top Chef Duels and appeared as Robin Williams' son in A Merry Friggin' Christmas. In 2015, he hosted the Billboard Music Awards and co-hosted The X Factor with Mario Lopez. In 2016, McHale guest-starred in an episode of The X-Files as Tad O'Malley, a conspiracy theorist and talk show host. He also appeared in the film X-Men: Apocalypse as William Stryker, a military scientist who is obsessed with mutantkind.
