His parents immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old. He attended Boston University, where he studied economics and film. Yang has also guest-starred on the television series Fresh Off the Boat, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Good Place. In 2019, Yang co-wrote and starred in the film Crazy Rich Asians.
