Quebec-born comic Jean-Marc Parent occasionally works as an actor as well. JMP is his pet name.
He was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and lost both his parents when he was six and fourteen. He spent a year studying psychology before going on to work as a social worker.
He received some basic training in comedy before his debut performance, L'Handicap, at the 1988 Just for Laughs auditions led to his discovery. He then collaborated with Michel Barrette as a duo. In 1989, he created the program "Open from above."
He specialized in comedy marathon shows during the 1990s. In front of crowds of several thousand people, he performed a first segment that lasted roughly two hours and was composed of traditional, written humor, followed by several hours of improvisation. occasionally till the following morning. For instance, when he decides to order pizza and has it delivered live from a bewildered restaurant owner for each of the thousands of viewers, the extravagances of these spectacles are reported in the news.
He was appointed the spokesperson for Operation Nez Rouge in 1993. He is the first comedian from Quebec to have the guts to perform at the Montreal Forum. At UQAM's Salle Pierre-Mercure, he hosted a "pajama party" to which 900 people were invited.
Jean-Marc Parent played the lead role in the 2004 movie Les Invasions barbares. He is currently on a tour of Quebec.
His first three awards were from the Gala des Oliviers in 2006, which he won.
He said that Jean-René Dufort's joke at the Gala des Oliviers in 2008 upset him.
At the Gala des Oliviers in 2012, he took home the comedy show of the year prize for Torture.
