Freestyle Love Supreme (FLS) is a hip-hop improv group that has been breaking ground since 2004. Founded by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, and Anthony Veneziale, the trio began their journey as an open mic night at The Knitting Factory in New York City. Since then, FLS has taken off in leaps and bounds: performing live shows around the world, releasing albums, being featured on television shows such as America’s Got Talent, and collaborating with some of the biggest names in music and theatre. FLS has achieved many milestones throughout its career. They have released two studio albums featuring original music: 2013's Surprise!, self-recorded on their own Tres Records label; and 2016's Stoked! produced by renowned producer Bill Laswell. In 2015 they joined forces with Lincoln Center Out of Doors to launch Freestyle Love Supreme Academy - a series of workshops hosted by some of the most influential hip-hop practitioners in the US. The company's production projects have included two Off-Broadway runs at Ars Nova.
A nationwide tour; and performance guest spots on various prominent television programs including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and The View. They have been honored with numerous awards including the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater from American Theatre Wing (2009) and an Audience Choice Award from Ovation Awards (2010). In addition to live shows worldwide - from Australia to London to Jamaica - FLS members have been involved in several feature films such as Hamilfilm, How I Met Your Mother: April 9th (2013), Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements (2019) and Monsters vs Aliens( 2009). Collaborations include working with prestigious artists like CeeLo Green and Doug E Fresh on special projects like Musicology Live! (2013).
