Darryl Lynn Hughley is an American actor and stand-up comedian. Hughley is the original host of BET's ComicView from 1992-1993 and the eponymous Hughley Breaks the News from 2008-2010. He hosted The DL Hughley Show, a daily radio show, on KISS FM 96.3 in Los Angeles from January 2012 until March 2014 when the station dropped the "KISS FM" brand and rebranded as Real 92.3. Hughley was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 28, 1963, the son of Audrey and Charles Hughley, who worked as a UPS truck driver. He is the second oldest of 10 children; his older sister Debra died when he was a child. Hughley's father died when he was 16 years old. Hughley was educated at Crenshaw High School, where he played football. He then attended Pepperdine University on a football scholarship but transferred to the University of Southern California (USC) after one semester. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
After graduating from USC in 1986, Hughley was discovered by comedian Rodney Dangerfield and signed a development deal with MCA Records. His first appearance was on Late Night with David Letterman in 1987. In 1992, he wrote and starred in the short-lived Fox sitcom Roc. That same year, he became the original host of BET's ComicView. He hosted the show for two seasons and then moved on to star in his sitcom, The Hughleys, which aired on ABC and UPN from 1998-2002. Hughley has also appeared in several films, including Spike Lee's The Original Kings of Comedy (2000), Soul Plane (2004), Scary Movie 3 (2003), and The Longest Yard (2005). He is also a frequent guest on political talk shows such as Real Time with Bill Maher and The O'Reilly Factor. In 2008, Hughley began hosting his nightly news program, D.L. Hughley Breaks the News, on CNN. The show was canceled in 2010. DL Hughley is the author of the books I Want You to Shut the Fuck Up: How the Audacity of Dopes Is Ruining America (2012) and Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years (2014).
Seasoned stand-up comic D.L. Hughley added a new flavor to The Daily Show by letting his "chill uncle" attitude and laid-back feelings carry him through his third show in the chair. The studio crowd at The Daily Show had a distinct aroma of a well-known, recently authorized narcotic before the taping even started. There were a lot of college students in the audience, so it's unclear who caused the scent, but it set the mood for a more laid-back event that fit with 59-year-old Hughley and the atmosphere he had created throughout his previous two days of hosting the program.
