Christopher Tucker is an American actor and comedian. He is known for his roles as Smokey in Friday, Steve Bluestone in Rush Hour and its sequels, Chief Lasseter in Pootie Tang, and Detective James Carter in the Rush Hour trilogy film series. Tucker was raised in Decatur, Georgia, and attended Columbia High School. While in high school, Tucker played football and basketball, as well as participated in the drama club. After graduating from high school, Tucker attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied civil engineering, and then transferred to Atlanta Technical Institute (now known as Atlanta Metropolitan State College). He became interested in stand-up comedy after attending a performance by comedian Eddie Murphy. While still in college, Tucker made his stand-up debut as an opening act for rapper Luther "Luke" Campbell. After graduating from college, Tucker moved to California, where he worked in construction while taking acting classes.
During the 1990s, he gained immense popularity on HBO's Def Comedy Jam and became a fan favorite. He made his film debut in the 1994 film House Party 3 as a character named Tasty Freeze. In 1995, Tucker appeared in a film cult classic Dead Presidents. Also in The Fifth Element, and Panther with Ice Cube. In 1996, director Spike Lee noticed Tucker and cast him as Smokey in the film Friday. In 1997, Tucker starred alongside Jackie Chan in the action comedy film Rush Hour. The film was a box office success, grossing over $244 million worldwide. His performance in the film earned him an MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Duo with Jackie Chan. In 1999, Tucker starred in the film Rush Hour 2, and in 2006 the Rush Hour 3 was best known for playing the role of detective James. He also reprised his role as Smokey in the sequel Friday After Next (2002). In 2011, Tucker made a comeback to stand-up comedy. He toured the U.S. with his stand-up comedy act and also performed at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, Canada.
