On February 25th, 1975 a star was born into the world--Chelsea Joy Handler! She has made a name for herself as an exuberant comedienne, acclaimed actress and writer, successful television host, and producer. The Handler family was a bustling household located in Livingston, New Jersey: Rita the homemaker, and Seymour, the used-car dealer oversaw their six children – with Jerry Handler being the youngest. Her father was a Jew of Ashkenazi descent who hails from America; and her mother, born in Germany but immigrated to the US in 1958, is Mormon. Growing up, Handler was exposed to Reform Judaism and later celebrated her Bat Mitzvah. The world witnessed a heart-wrenching moment for the adult woman on TLC's Who Do You Think You Are?, as she sobbed upon learning that her grandfather had been part of the German army during World War II.
For the summers, she would often travel to Martha's Vineyard where her family had a beautiful home. She went to Livingston High School, yet was hardly a happy student due to the high number of "assholes" on staff. Handler is the youngest of six siblings; tragically, her eldest brother Chet passed away at age 21 while hiking in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. At nine years young, she experienced it all. When she was 19, she left New Jersey and ventured to Los Angeles. To make money and build her acting career, she stayed with her aunt in Bel Air while working as a waitress. At the age of 21, Handler made up her mind to give stand-up comedy a go after she recounted being arrested for DUI in front of an audience composed of other lawbreakers and they found it amusing.
In 1989, her mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that she bravely fought for 15 years before succumbing to it in 2006. In August 2018, Handler revealed she had begun working on a documentary and a talk show for Netflix examining the concept of white privilege and the impact it has had on her life's trajectory. The highly anticipated documentary, entitled Hello, Privilege. It's Me Chelsea was released in 2019 and received a warm welcome from audiences around the world. Handler struck a multi-year first-look agreement with NBCUniversal towards developing fascinating programming for Universal Television and the newly established Universal Television Alternate Studio. After an impressive seven-year stint as the host of E!'s highest-rated show Chelsea Lately, Handler emerged as the only female late-night talk show presenter on air.
Also in 2019, Handler published her first memoir, Life Will Be the Death of Me, through Penguin Random House. In this gripping memoir, she chronicles her year-long journey of self-exploration. To promote her memoir, she jumped on a comedic tour. She marked a milestone in Marvel Television and Hulu's collaboration as they unveiled their plans to bring several beloved, eccentric characters from the comics to life via new animated series. Handler was slated to produce Marvel's Tigra & Dazzler Show, a joint effort with Jeph Loeb and Erica Rivinoja. The series was set to follow the adventures of two progressive superhero pals, Tigra and Dazzler, as they fought for their rightful place in the world. In September 2019, Universal TV seized the opportunity to create an exciting television series from the captivating book. Despite this, in December 2019, Rivinoja and the series' writers left the show due to various creative differences.
With the rest of the production team gone, only Handler and Loeb remained to continue their work on it. At the beginning of 2020, Marvel Studios made a drastic decision to discontinue their series. In May of last year, Handler proclaimed that she would be producing and performing a stand-up special on WarnerMedia's streaming platform HBO Max. In her talk, she will reflect on and share stories from her life about family, friends, and therapy. Irving Azoff and Allison Statter will join Handler as producers in creating the special. With their support, her manager is certain that they can bring this unique project to life. In September 2020, Handler successfully sold two of her comedy projects to Universal. Blair, which went to HBO Max, is centered around a critical young woman who has hit rock bottom. Wiped Out was acquired by Peacock and details the story of one woman's journey as she strives to restore her life after it vanishes due to an intergalactic black hole.
