Bret Peter Tarrant McKenzie ONZM is a New Zealand musician, comedian, music supervisor, and former actor. He was a member of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra. McKenzie co-wrote and acted in one of Flight of the Conchords' songs, "Albi". The song is about Albanians and is based on his own experiences with an Albanian flatmate. He also played a role in the film Eagle vs Shark as Ozzy. McKenzie has been the music supervisor for several films, including The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Mockingjay – Part 1. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song "Man or Māori?" from the film Hunua Ranges. He also wrote the lyrics for "Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring", which is performed by Billy Boyd in The Return of the King. In 2012, McKenzie was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours, for services to film and music. Since making his professional acting debut in 2000 in a minor role in the UK series Dark Knight that was filmed in Wellington, McKenzie has occasionally appeared on stage. McKenzie has appeared in episodes of television comedy series such as Flight of the Conchords,Documentary Now! and Comedy Bang! Bang!. He had a minor role in the film Yes Man starring Jim Carrey. In 2009, McKenzie was cast as Figwit in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, reprising his role from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In 2012, McKenzie reprised his role of Figwit in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this time as a speaking character with more screen time. McKenzie also played a small role in Mockingjay – Part 1, the third instalment of The Hunger Games film series. In 2016, McKenzie wrote the lyrics for "The Star of the Show", a song from the Trolls soundtrack. The song was performed by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. McKenzie has been involved with several charity projects. He is a patron of the New Zealand Children's Cancer Foundation. In 2010, he helped design and launch a range of T-shirts to raise money for the Foundation. In 2011, McKenzie travelled to Rwanda with the charity ChildAid to help build a school. McKenzie is a vegan. He has said that he became a vegan after reading about the environmental impact of animal agriculture. In May 2019, McKenzie was announced as one of the four new judges on The Masked Singer Australia. In September 2019, McKenzie announced that he would be writing his first book, an illustrated children's book called "The Animal Song". The book will be released in November 2019.
