Sarah Silverman, an actress and comedian, wrote a memoir titled The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. It was released in 2010.
Her family and childhood are covered in the first part of the book. According to Silverman, she wet her bed up to the age of 16. At age 2, she would say "fuck" to her father's amusement. Her family supported her comedic approach and didn't find her sense of humor inappropriate. She claims that Garry Shandling was her biggest influence and that, like him, she developed a fictionalized version of herself for the public to see. She acknowledges consuming marijuana frequently. With the epitaph "She liked dogs, New York, television, children, friendship, sex, laughter, heartbreaking music, marijuana, farts, and hugging," God, the author of the book's imaginary afterword, writes about Silverman in the year 2063, the year of her passing at age 93.
The book was published on April 20, 2010, which is both Adolf Hitler's birthday and a "day of celebration for marijuana smokers." In a promotional letter she wrote just for Amazon.com, Silverman mockingly compares herself to Fyodor Dostoevsky and Ernest Hemingway while positioning herself as a serious author.
A musical adaptation of Silverman's autobiography made its Off-Broadway debut on April 30, 2022, and it went on stage at the Linda Gross Theatre on May 23. The production's cast, which is led by Caissie Levy and Bebe Neuwirth, was directed by Anne Kauffman. Together with Joshua Harmon, Silverman co-wrote the musical's book. Adam Schlesinger composed the music, and David Yazbek added additional lyrics and music after Schlesinger passed away. It represents one of Schlesinger's last initiatives before his passing in April 2020.
