About My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady is a musical theater production inspired by George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play, Pygmalion. Its captivating story and romantic music were crafted together by Alan Jay Lerner for the lyrics and Frederick Loewe for the score. Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins - an expert phonetician- to transform her into the epitome of a lady. Despite his misanthropic outlook and struggles with understanding women, Henry Higgins (a linguistics professor) in Covent Garden develops an emotional connection to her starring Martine McCutcheon and Jonathan Pryce. The stage shows 1956 Broadway production was a notable critical and popular success, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This musical achieved a remarkable achievement by surpassing the longest-running record for Broadway at that time and was even followed up with success in London. Both the stage and film versions (with Audrey Hepburn) of this story featured stellar performances from Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews directed by Bartlett Sher ( The King & I, To Kill a Mockingbird). The success of the 1964 film adaptation has been followed by an ongoing stream of revivals, being awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture. The long-awaited Broadway revival created by Lincoln Center Theater and Nederlander Presentations Inc. debuted on March 15th, 2018 in previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theater and was formally premiered to the public on April 19th of that same year.

Under the creative guidance of Bartlett Sher, Christopher Gattelli choreographed the production, Michael Yeargan crafted the scenic design, Ted Sperling (Music Supervisor), Catherine Zuber handled costume design and Donald Holder illuminated it with his lighting designs like “Rolls Royce of a revival”. The star-studded cast of the show included Lauren Ambrose as Eliza, Harry Hadden-Paton as Professor Henry Higgins, Diana Rigg in her role as Mrs. Higgins (Dame Vanessa Redgrave), Norbert Leo Butz playing Alfred P. Doolittle, Allan Corduner taking on Colonel Pickering's part, Jordan Donica starring Freddy and Linda Mugleston portraying Mrs. Pearce. The much-anticipated recast included Rosemary Harris as Mrs. Higgins, Laura Benanti in the leading role of Eliza Doolittle (flower seller), and Danny Burstein or Alexander Gemignani taking on the mantle of Alfred P. Doolittle. After an impressive run of 39 previews and 509 regular performances, the revival closed its curtains on July 7th, 2019. In December 2019, Shereen Ahmed and Laird Mackintosh stepped onto the stage as Eliza and Higgins to launch a North American tour of the production. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, performances were put on hiatus in March 2020 and fortunately resumed this past September 2021. This program is projected to continue until the summer of 2022.

While on the other hand, Hadden-Paton (The Crown, Time Out, and Downton Abbey) reprising his role as Higgins, alongside Stephen K. Amos in the part of Alfred P. Doolittle, Vanessa Redgrave playing Mrs. Higgins, Malcolm Sinclair enacting Colonel Pickering, Maureen Beattie portraying Mrs. Pearce and Sharif Afifi anchoring Freddy's character.
