About Louisville City FC

Louisville City Football Club is an American professional soccer club based in Louisville, Kentucky. The club was founded on October 26, 2014, and began to play in 2015 as a member of the United Soccer League (USL), the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. On November 21, 2017, it was announced that Louisville City would move up to Major League Soccer (MLS) as an expansion team in 2020. Louisville City FC MLS won the USL Cup in its first two seasons, in 2015 and 2017. In 2019, they became the first back-to-back champions in USL history when they defeated Real Monarchs SLC 3–1 in the final. Louisville City Soccer is currently coached by John Hackworth. Louisville City home games at Lynn Family Stadium, which opened on April 14, 2020. The team's colors are purple and gold, and its primary badge features a fleur-de-lis.

Before Louisville Soccer Team's founding, the city was home to two previous professional soccer clubs. The Louisville Thunder played in the American Soccer League in the late 1970s and early 1980s, while the Kentucky Thunder played in the USL A-League in the late 1990s. In 2014, local investors Wayne Estopinal and Ed Hart announced their intention to bring a professional soccer team to Louisville. They met with then-USL President Tim Holt to discuss Louisville's viability as a soccer market, and on October 26, 2014, the club was officially announced as the USL's 24th franchise. Hart later stated that Louisville was chosen due to its central location in the United States, and its "passionate" soccer fans. The team's name, Louisville City FC, and colors were unveiled on December 7, 2014. The club's badge was designed by Louisville-based design firm Jostin Design.

On June 2, 2015, the club announced that former El Paso Patriots and Orlando City coach James O'Connor would be its first head coach. O'Connor had previously worked with Estopinal when the latter was President of Orlando City. Louisville City FC began to play in 2015 at Louisville Slugger Field, home of Minor League Baseball's Louisville Bats. In their inaugural season, Louisville City finished in second place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 18 wins, 8 losses, and 8 draws. They defeated the Rochester Rhinos 3–1 in the conference semifinals and the Charleston Battery 2–1 in the conference finals to reach the USL Championship game, where they lost to the LA Galaxy II 1–0.

In 2019, Louisville City's fifth season, the club again finished first in the Eastern Conference with a record of 22 wins, 6 losses, and 8 draws. They defeated Birmingham Legion 3–2 in the conference quarterfinals and Tampa Bay Rowdies 2–1 in the conference semifinals before losing to Real Salt Lake 2–1 in the conference finals. In 2020, Louisville City's sixth season, the club again finished first in the Eastern Conference with a record of 20 wins, 5 losses, and 9 draws. They defeated Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3–0 in the conference quarterfinals and Tampa Bay Rowdies 3–2 in the conference semifinals before losing to the Phoenix Rising FC 4–1 in the conference finals. The club has also qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League twice (2019, 2020), reaching the quarterfinals in 2020.

Louisville City FC hosted its inaugural international friendly last June 2023, as FC Kaiserslautern from Germany pays a visit to the magnificent Lynn Family Stadium. FC Kaiserslautern, a renowned and illustrious club hailing from Rhineland-Palatinate, has garnered a significant fanbase in the United States over the years. This is primarily attributed to the team's proximity to the United States Ramstein Air Base. "This will undoubtedly be an extraordinary new experience for all those involved," stated Thomas Hengen, the managing director of FCK, in an official press release. "Given the significant number of Americans residing in the Kaiserslautern region, we at FCK have always fostered a strong connection with the United States. It is truly a momentous occasion for us to journey to the USA and proudly represent German soccer."
