About FIM World Supercross

FIM Motocross World Championship is the premier championship of motocross racing, organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), divided into two distinct classes: MXGP and MX2. As of 2013, a third class was added: WMX (Women's Motocross World Championship). The MXGP class is the premier motocross class and features two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles with engine capacities up to 1000cc; while the MX2 class allows only two-stroke engines up to 250cc. The WMX class features only female riders, who compete on a separate motocross circuit. The FIM Motocross World Championship began in 1957 and is the oldest motocross championship in the world. The first Motocross World Champion was Swede Torsten Hallman. A 250cc class was established in 1962, and a 125cc class was introduced in 1975. The competition was formerly called the European Championship before 1957. In 2004, the F.I.M. changed the displacement formulas to reflect the changes in engine technology, and to encourage manufacturers to produce more race-oriented four-stroke motocross bikes. As a result, the 450cc class was renamed the MX1 class, while the 250cc class became the MX2 class.

The new MX3 class allowed for two-stroke or four-stroke engines of up to 450cc, as long as they adhered to the new-for-2004 four-stroke equivalency formula. In 2012, the MX1 class was renamed the MXGP class, while the MX3 class was dropped entirely. The 250cc class was renamed the MX2 class, and a new EMX250 European Championship was created for two-stroke 250cc motocross bikes. The Motocross World Championship is currently sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The final Motocross Grand Prix of the season is held in Italy at the famous Mantova circuit, which has hosted a round of the championship every year since 1986. Other notable motocross Grand Prix venues include the British motocross Grand Prix at Matterley Basin, the German motocross Grand Prix at Teutschenthal, and the Belgian motocross Grand Prix at Lommel. The FIM Motocross World Championship is broadcast around the world, with television coverage available in over 120 countries. The championship is also streamed live on the internet, with over 3 million viewers tuning in to watch the races each year.
