The National Finals Rodeo is the premier rodeo event by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). This annual event has been held since 1959 and showcases the best cowboys and cowgirls in the sport. The NFR takes place over ten days in Las Vegas, Nevada, and features a variety of events such as bareback riding, team roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and more. The competition is fierce as the top 15 contestants in each event compete for the title of world champion and a share of a $10 million purse. The history of the National Finals Rodeo is rich with tradition and success. These awards include All-Around Cowboy/Cowgirl of the Year which goes to the contestant who accumulates the most money during all ten rounds; Bull Rider/Bareback Rider of the Year which goes to those who accumulate the most money during their respective events; Steer Wrestler/Team Roper of the Year which goes to those who accumulate most money during their respective events; Saddle Bronc Rider/Barrel Racer of Year which goes to those who accumulate most money during their respective events; Rookie Cowboy/Cowgirl of the Year which goes to first-year contestants who accumulated most money during all ten rounds; and Specialty Act Award which is awarded to any contestant that performs an exceptional feat at any point during competition at NFR. Currently leading the PRCA is CEO George Taylor who took over in 2019 after Karl Stressman left for another position within the PRCA organization.
Taylor has already made his mark on NFR by introducing new technology such as the dynamic scoring system that allows fans to track real-time scores from anywhere around the world via online streaming services or mobile apps.
