About National Black Rodeo Finals

National Black Rodeo Finals is a traditional event. It has been around since the mid-1980s and was founded by a group of African American cowboys, cowgirls, and supporters. The event takes place annually in Oklahoma City and features rodeo events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, breakaway roping, ladies' barrel racing, and team roping. The National Black Rodeo Finals home games are held at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City for three days every year with over 10 thousand cheering supporters attending each day. The award given out each year is the world champion buckle. This prestigious award is given to one cowboy and one cowgirl that manages to stay on their bronco or bull for 8 seconds without touching it with their free hand. Throughout its long history, this event has achieved several milestones such as being broadcast on national television in 2003 and hosting its first international competitors from Canada in 2010. It has remained an important event for African American cowboys and cowgirls to celebrate their culture and compete in the rodeo.

Among the top players competing at this event were Larry Mahan who won seven world championships between 1975-1981 including a five-peat championship win from 1976- 1980; Tuff Hedeman who won four world championships between 1989 -1995; Lane Frost who won two world championships in 1987 & 1988; Sherry Cervi who has earned 3 world barrels titles from 2004 to 2007; Ashley Baur who had an amazing run in 2017 winning six consecutive events; Jake Wright who won three consecutive world championship titles from 2015 to 2017; there are also many other great cowboys and girls too numerous to mention here but all have made major contributions to this event. The National Finals Rodeo is a unique experience that brings together the best cowboys and cowgirls in the world. Rivals: Larry Mahan vs Tuff Hedeman, Lane Frost vs Sherry Cervi, Ashley Baur vs Jake Wright, Tiger Flowers vs Cody Custer, Taos Muncy vs Trevor Brazile, Kenny Tribble vs Dean Solsma, Rowdy Parrott vs Chad Ferley, Jordon Hightower vs Rich Skelton, Clayton Biglow vs Kody Slay, Wes Stevenson vs Dawson Jandreau.
